Volunteering

SPE Aberdeen is run by its members. Nine committees and around 150 volunteers deliver every conference, technical evening, school visit and networking event we hold across the North East — alongside full-time jobs in the energy sector.

Roles are open to members at any career stage, and you set the commitment. Some volunteers give a single afternoon a year; others chair a committee.

Careers

Energy careers are built on exposure as much as coursework. Degrees teach the theory; what employers look for is evidence that you understand how the industry actually operates — and that you have met the people who run it.

Our events and student chapters put you in that position early, across oil and gas, offshore wind, hydrogen, geothermal, carbon storage and electrification.

Networking
Technical evenings and informal events where students sit alongside working engineers and hiring managers.
Site visits
Tech tours behind the scenes at local operators and service companies — see the equipment and the working culture first hand.
Get involved
Take a committee role in your chapter: organise events, invite speakers, and build a track record before you graduate.

Student chapters

University of Aberdeen Chapter give you early exposure to the industry while you are still studying — company visits, technical talks, and direct contact with engineers doing the work.

Members regularly move from chapter committee roles into the section's wider volunteer programme.
